The occurrence of Astatoreochromis alluaudi is not limited to Lake Victoria. One finds this kind also in the neighboring waters. It lives on rocky shores at depths of 1-5 m, but also in reed areas and regions with flooded vegetation.
male
Coloration
Male: Body brass yellow, which changes to the tail end in the green. Anal fin red with black border and several yellow, gray edged egg-stains. Dorsal fin black bordered, ventral fins black. A strong black stripe runs from the forehead through the eye and ends at the corner of the mouth. Depending on the mood, the species shows up to eight more or less distinct horizontal stripes. Females: The female does not have so long withdrawn dorsal and anal fins. Also missing the red in the anal fin and the big Eiatrappen. The color of the pelvic fins is lighter.
Aquarium / Facility
The aquarium should at least have a footprint of 120 x 40 cm and be equipped with sandy soil. It should be emphasized that each male can form a territory, i. For each male you should create a stone structure behind which it can determine its spawning area. Between the stone structures, which should not be much higher than half the pool height, you can distribute rubble. However, larger sandy areas should be present. Dense plant clumps in the form of Java fern or Anubias, which should be attached to the boulders, cover the female or inferior males. Also a tube can be introduced as protection.
size
ca. 15 cm
nutrition
Astatoreochromis alluaudi is a parlyngeal-snail-eating snail-eater feeding on snails in the wild, whose snail shells it crushes in its mouth. In captivity, he is not fussy about food. One feeds flake food, mussel meat, white and black mosquito larvae, cichlid sticks, artemia, mysis and occasionally a piece of zucchini or cucumber.
social behavior
Astatoreochromis alluaudi is a rather aggressive fish, which can greatly affect its peers in old age. His aggressiveness is only intrinsic. Other species are hardly bothered, at least if the aquarium is big enough. Since this species does not cross with other Lake Victoria cichlids, according to my findings, it can be cultivated together with other similarly sized species, if one manages well with one male and two females.
breed
Maternal mouthbrooder. The male puts on a smaller spawning trough, in which it lures the female to spawn. The breeding season is about 20 days. Thereafter, the female cared for the boys for about 12 days. During the breeding season, the female does not eat any food. After about ten days you can put the brooding female into a breeding tank, without it spits out his boys or eats. The freshly released boys are fed with fresh hatched Artemia, Staubfutter, Rädertierchen, shelled Artemia eggs or Cyclops.
Others
So far, it has been said that this species is not prone to hybridization and therefore can be kept in common with other Lake Victoria cichlids. However, recent research refutes this assumption. In the wild Astatoreochromis alluaudi is not endangered.
